Scotts employs an intensive research and development program, backed by the industry’s highest standards of seed harvesting, clearing and testing.
The process begins with searching for turf grasses that show favorable characteristics, such as tolerance to hot weather or superior greening. Promising turf seeds are cross-pollinated with other varieties for further study to assure best seed results.
The resulting grass plants are raised in a growth chamber so our researchers can track overall strengths and weaknesses under various real life conditions. Scotts then evaluates these prospective new varieties of professional grass seed for as many as ten or twelve years. Once one grass seed mix is approved, it’s propagated under the strictest quality control standards.
After harvest, scotts lawn seed is cleaned at our state-of-the-art cleaning facility, mainly by sizing with both screens and indent cylinders. Successful cleaning removes a large amount of weed seed and chaff, and the machines are cleaned after each lot passes through to avoid cross-contamination.
